In today’s heterogeneous computing environments data interoperability is an absolute necessity. The exchange of large data sets on magnetic tape media between dissimilar operating systems has always been problematic at best. There currently exist no standard data format to facilitate cross platform data exchange on tape media between UNIX and Windows. This was the driving force that created Tar98. Tar98 is a Windows NT application that reads and writes tapes in the UNIX tar format. It has a well-designed graphical user interface that virtually eliminates the complexity of archiving. Unlike the UNIX tar command, there is no need to learn a plethora of cryptic command line switches in order exchange data. In fact, most archiving operations can be accomplished in their entirety without using the keyboard. However, this doesn’t mean that the power user loses control. We have made Tar98 sophisticated enough to handle the most demanding and obscure of needs.
